Hi there, thanks to your post, I've just ordered the book through bookdepository.co.uk. I've started silversmithing last week through a government sponsored course, and so far I love it.

Hi Liz So glad to hear you like the blog! I didn't do any courses I learnt what I know online which is all I needed! I'm going to be doing a series of step by step projects over the next few months. What sort of thing are you wanting to learn?
I think it's a good idea to go on a course too because you can see the techniques in 'real life' and ask questions.

hi Kate, i am interested in learning how to make beaded bracelets and necklaces and earrings, but dont know what thread or fixings are best, i love the idea of making a range of different designs using different materials, and i love things like bali silver spacers.

I cant beleive you learned it all online....how cool to be self taught, i might check out that option myself.

Thanks...liz.

Once you have the basic techniques for jewellery making you are set to go. I found About.com very helpful; they have a whole section dedicated to beaded jewellery making. There's plenty of good books on amazon and play also. To start making jewellery the main things you need are:
A set of pliers (round nose, cutters and chain nose pliers)
Tigertail (or some strong threading material)
crimp beads
Clam shells
jumprings
earwires
a tray or mat to work on
and a nice selection of beads (a bead box is useful to keep all the bits together - you can get cheap hobby boxes from pound shops)
Check out eBay for all of this and there are plenty of sellers who offer Bali findings - which I agree with you Liz are wonderful and sterling silver making them very good quality.
